To commemorate its first year, Coterie Cathedral Hill invited residents to share their favorite memories and moments. Here, in words and pictures, are some of the ways the extraordinary residents and staff have created not just a community, but a coterie as well.

Coterie and Its Residents, Defined

The word coterie means “an intimate and often exclusive group of persons with a unifying common interest or purpose.” Coterie Cathedral Hill brings together some of the world's most discerning, influential, and driven older people into an inspiring environment where they can confidently continue to pursue their interests and make a difference in the world.

Coterie Celebrates Life All Year Long

Delightful and often unexpected celebrations occurred throughout the year. From time-honored events like Valentine’s Day, Christmas caroling, and Hannukah feasts to elevated gatherings.

During the inaugural year, Coterie Cathedral Hill threw a festive Lunar New Year party featuring traditional Chinese food and dancing – and even an art class where participants learned how to make an authentic Chinese lantern.

Residents also participated in an artful Picasso Soiree replete with seafood paella, sangria, and a Spanish guitarist.

Another example of a stand-out gathering? Coterie hosted Drag Queen Trivia Night. Resident Janet says, “I recently entertained a guest who happened to be there. She said, ‘Well, this is a fun place!’”

Traditional events like a visit with Santa were kicked up a notch. Residents told Santa what they wanted for Christmas while sampling festive hors d’oeuvres and enjoying strolling carolers in Victorian garb.

Making a Splash

Whether it’s an official holiday or not, Coterie Cathedral Hill works to surprise and delight residents every day. Resident Deborah recalls the first time she stepped onto the 11th-floor terrace and gazed at the sparkling blue water of the rooftop pool. “I dipped my toe into the water and it was the perfect temperature. I felt so at home. And the view!”

A Convivial Social Scene

“My delight doesn’t stem from a single moment or event,” resident Janet says. “It comes from being in a warm, friendly environment where I can swim when I please, eat delicious food I don’t have to cook, and know I have help if I need it.”

Gloria and Saul agree. Since moving in on opening day, the pair have embraced each day with true joie de vivre – joining fitness classes and attending events, performances, and all the social hours. Gloria and Saul decided to move to Coterie after just one visit, and immediately became active members of the community.

“The grace and kindness of the people who work here is extraordinary,” says Coterie residents Cynthia and Richard. “It makes us very happy. We are very grateful that our family discovered this place for us.”

As resident Jim puts it: “From the very first day, every request I made was answered the same way: ‘Yes, of course.’ Extra pillows? Someone to help set up my TVs? Parking for the interior design team? Whatever I needed.”

Neighbors Become Friends

Claire’s apartment sits a few doors down from Leonie. The two would always wave and smile when they saw each other. One day in the restaurant, Claire sat down and started a conversation with Leonie. They found they shared similar interests, and now they coordinate their mealtimes, often walking to the restaurant together.

Resident Jim says, “I have moved many times…but this was the first time I moved into a community of people whom I would see every day. I haven’t lived with my family since I moved away to college. For the first time since then, when I’m at Coterie Cathedral Hill, I feel that I’m home.”

Coterie Cathedral Hill residents experience San Francisco’s unique cultural tableau, with engagements ranging from meals at Michelin-star-rated restaurants to visits to San Francisco’s most breathtaking landmarks. Coterie organizes regular group excursions to museums, the opera and symphony, theater productions, and festivals – and, of course, residents can always arrange the community’s private car service to events of their choice.
